A cold front passed through the region last night and the result will be a much cooler day as we close out the work week. In fact, high temperatures today and Saturday will be some 10-15 degrees lower than yesterday’s high which was well up in the 70’s. Another cold front will approach the area Saturday night and early Sunday and it will be accompanied by some shower activity. High pressure builds back into the region for the early part of next week.
Elsewhere, Hurricane Patricia underwent an amazing strengthening yesterday in the eastern Pacific Ocean reaching category 5 status overnight from category 1 levels earlier in the day. The central pressure of this hurricane dropped an incredible 100 millibars in a 24-hour period and maximum sustained winds are now near 200 mph. This hurricane will slam into southwestern Mexico later today or early tonight just to the west of Manzanillo with wind gusts of 185 mph possible. After landfall, the storm will weaken significantly as the center moves inland, but substantial rainfall will continue to fall along its path. By late in the weekend, its remains will affect the western part of the Gulf of Mexico and eastern Texas with significant rainfall and strong winds. After that, rainfall associated with Patricia's remains will likely get caught up in a system that could produce rain here at mid-week.
