1:45 PM | Updates on a "perfectly-timed" storm and a potential major mid-week storm

Our active weather pattern continues and it looks like two storms will affect the Mid-Atlantic region by the middle of next week. The first storm will be rather weak, but certainly not inconsequential, and its timing might just be perfect for producing a white Christmas for those in the Mid-Atlantic from near the PA/MD border region northeast to the NYC metro region. This storm will spread light precipitation into the Mid-Atlantic on Monday evening into early Tuesday (Christmas Day) as it moves eastward from West Virginia to the Mid-Atlantic coast. This looks like the type of system that could produce anywhere from a coating to a few inches of snow from the Philly metro region to NYC and perhaps even as far south as northern Maryland. The first storm pulls out quickly by Tuesday afternoon and attention will then shift to the Deep South for a potential big one.
A second storm will be considerably stronger and more moisture-laden and could end up being a major snowstorm for much of the Northeast US. This storm will likely head from the Deep South on late Tuesday to the Tennessee Valley by early Wednesday. We've talked for days about a blocking pattern setting up in the upper atmosphere that would likely take this storm towards the east coast rather than the Great Lakes and I believe that from this location in the Tennessee Valley, energy will transfer to the Mid-Atlantic coast and precipitation will likely spread into the Mid-Atlantic region during the Wednesday PM hours. Heavy snow is likely in inland locations late Wednesday into Thursday with rain likely near the coast. The big cities along the I-95 corridor will likely be a battle zone area for snow, ice and rain although I do believe there will be some snow accumulations in the northern and western suburbs and the potential exists for significant amounts.
