7:00 AM | Strong cold frontal passage tomorrow night brings an end to the current warm spell

Paul Dorian

Very mild air for this time of year will stick around through Saturday, but then a strong cold front will arrive and bring an end to the current warm spell. Temperatures today and Saturday will continue at well above normal levels, but then we’ll turn noticeably colder late tomorrow night following the passage of the strong cold front.  After a morning shower or two on Saturday, the approaching strong cold front will generate a narrow line of showers and embedded thunderstorms during the afternoon and early evening hours and some of the thunderstorms can be on the strong-to-severe side and contain brief downpours and gusty winds. Winds on Sunday will kick up out of the NW and temperatures will hold in the 40’s.  Weak low pressure from the south-central US will head towards us on Monday and it could generate a couple of rain or snow showers. It'll turn warmer again by the middle of next week and more rainfall is likely on Tuesday and Wednesday, and then another cold shot should arrive for the second half of next week.

7:00 AM | Strong cold frontal passage tonight ushers in cooler air for the weekend...unsettled early next week and then another strong front to deal with at mid-week

Paul Dorian

The work week will close out with well above normal temperatures across northern Alabama, but then a strong cold front will bring an end to the current warm spell.  This cold front will arrive this evening and bring the threat of showers and possible strong thunderstorms with brief downpours and gusty winds.  Once the front clears the region by early Saturday, skies will clear and temperatures will be far cooler than they will be today holding in the 50’s for highs on Saturday afternoon.  After a sunny and pleasantly cool day to end the weekend, it’ll become unsettled early next week as a couple of weak disturbances pass by and then the arrival of a mid-week cold front could result in some severe weather for the area. Stay tuned on that.

7:00 AM | Strong cold front arrives late tomorrow with possible strong thunderstorms and ends warm spell...80 degrees possible on Friday afternoon

Paul Dorian

Slow-moving low pressure over southern Florida today will head out over the western Atlantic and this should allow for the return of partial sunshine and our warmer-than-normal weather pattern will continue. In fact, temperatures on Friday will likely flirt with the 80 degree mark for highs just ahead of an approaching strong cold frontal system.  This strong cold front will generate showers and thunderstorms late in the day on Friday or more likely during the evening hours. Some of the thunderstorms associated with this frontal passage can be on the strong side with gusty winds and brief downpours.  Following the passage of the cold front, temperatures will return to much more seasonal levels this weekend. It turns unsettled again early next week with the threat for more showers and thunderstorms ahead of another cold frontal system.

7:00 AM | Strong cold front arrives Saturday night and ends our current warm spell

Paul Dorian

Very mild air for this time of year will stick around through much of the day on Saturday and there could even be record-breaking temperatures in some spots in the Mid-Atlantic region this afternoon, tomorrow and/or Saturday.  With the warm up comes the likelihood of patchy fog during the late night and early morning time periods.  On Saturday, a strong cold front will be approaching us from the Great Lakes region and it will generate occasional PM rain around here and even a possible thunderstorm or two as it remains quite mild for one last day.  Following the passage of the cold front, temperatures on Sunday and Monday will return to much more seasonal levels and winds will kick up out of the NW as we close out the weekend.

7:00 AM | Unsettled conditions remain behind slowly departing low pressure system

Paul Dorian

Slow-moving low pressure will grudgingly edge off the southeast coast of Florida today, but it’ll be close enough to the area to generate the threat for an occasional shower. Significant clearing will finally take place on Friday as the low pressure system pulls away to the northeast in a track generally parallel to the east coast.  Mainly sunny skies on Friday will boost afternoon high temperatures to near the 80 degree mark and it’ll remain quite warm on Saturday as well, but then turn somewhat cooler on Sunday.

2:25 PM | *NASA discovers first known system of seven Earth-size planets around a single star*

Paul Dorian

NASA’s Spitzer Space Telescope has revealed the first known system of seven Earth-size planets around a single star and three of these are believed to be in the habitable zone – the area around the parent star where a rocky planet is most likely to have liquid water. The discovery sets a record for the greatest number of habitable-zone planets found around a single star outside of our solar system. All of these seven planets could have liquid water, the chances are highest with the three in the habitable zone.
