A blizzard rages on this morning in the Upper Midwest and, when all is said and done, there will be more than a foot of snow on the ground in portions of Iowa and Wisconsin. Also, winds will reach 50 mph in this region causing extensive blowing and drifting of snow later today and tonight. That same powerful storm system will sweep a strong cold front through the I-95 corridor late tonight and early Friday. Heavy rain will accompany this front in the wee hours of the morning and there can be a rumble or two of thunder. Winds will also get quite gusty as the front heads through the region in the overnight hours. On Friday, temperatures will drop during the day as colder air rushes into the Mid-Atlantic on strong west-to-northwest winds and there can even be some snow shower activity late in the day or at night. Saturday will see a continuation of strong winds, cold conditions, and possibly another snow shower. In the higher elevations to our north and west (e.g., West Virginia, western Maryland), a significant “lake-effect” snow event will bring numerous snow showers and some accumulating snow.
