1:55 PM | *Northern California getting pounded today…some incredible rain and snow amounts piling up*

Paul Dorian

Southern California got slammed on Friday and early Saturday from one intense storm and yet another is now pounding away at northern California. A widespread 3-6 inch rainfall is expected in the San Francisco Bay and Sacramento Valley regions by early tomorrow from this latest in a series of storm systems. Even higher amounts of rain are possible in the higher elevations of the Santa Cruz Mountains over the next 24 hours or so. To go along with the heavy rain, there will be strong winds today and heavy mountain snows. As this seemingly daily onslaught continues in California, some amazing numbers are piling up with respect to rain and snowfall amounts.

7:00 AM | A great way to start the week

Paul Dorian

An upper-level trough of low pressure will drop into the Central Plains today and southerly winds on its east side will push unseasonably warm and moist air into the area.  In fact, temperatures won't be too far from record territory (79 degrees set in 1986) as we begin the new work week.  After a dry start to the week, the increasing humidity and low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico will increase our chances for showers and thunderstorms as the week progresses.

7:00 AM | A setback in temperatures next couple days, but warmer second half of the week

Paul Dorian

High pressure across southeastern Canada will bring temperatures down to more seasonal levels over the next couple of days as low-level northerly winds develop in the region.  After this high pressure system pushes off the coast on Tuesday, it’ll turn warmer again for the second half of the week.  However, it’ll also become somewhat unsettled later this week as numerous frontal systems will take up residence in the Mid-Atlantic region.

3:30 PM | *The increasingly likely return of El Nino*

Paul Dorian

The past six weeks have seen the demise of weak La Nina conditions in the tropical Pacific Ocean and now there are signs of an unfolding El Nino. Ocean temperatures have increased to more than 2.0°C above normal just off the coast of Peru and this could very well develop into a more widespread event. Numerous computer forecast models now indicate a growing likelihood for an El Nino event in the equatorial Pacific – some as early as the spring in the Northern Hemisphere. If El Nino does form, it could have serious implications on global weather patterns and the 2017 Atlantic Basin tropical season.

7:00 AM | Spring fever alert for the weekend

Paul Dorian

First, an update on the weather situation in California…an intense storm closes in today and it’ll produce widespread heavy rainfall across the state with up to ten inches possible in southern sections.  In fact, this could turn out to be one of the worst storms in many years for southern California with strong winds, possible power outages and flash flooding to go along with the heavy rainfall.  Yet another storm arrives early next week and this one is likely to primarily pound northern California with additional substantial rainfall - something they certainly don't need.

Here in the Mid-Atlantic region, high pressure pushes off the coast this weekend and this will allow warmer air to push into the area from the southwest.  In fact, high temperatures should surpass 60 degrees in the DC metro region on both weekend days – a true taste of spring.  High pressure will then build into SE Canada on Monday and this should cause temperatures to slide back some in the Mid-Atlantic for a couple of days; especially, from New York City northward.  It’ll then turn warmer again by the middle and latter parts of next week.

For this region, high pressure will provide us with plenty of sunshine as we close out the work week.  It’ll start off on the chilly side, but afternoon temperatures should climb past the 70 degree mark.  The weekend becomes unsettled with an upper low in the Lower Mississippi Valley bringing us a daily threat for showers and thunderstorms.
