A soaking rain event is unfolding for much of Florida as low pressure pushes into the southern half of the state from the Gulf of Mexico. There will be occasional rain in the region from later today into Thursday and perhaps a strong thunderstorm or two as cooling aloft will combine with increasing low-level moisture to support enough buoyancy for scattered thunderstorms. The Gulf of Mexico low pressure system is moving quite slowly so significant clearing will likely not take place around here until Friday.

Slow-moving low pressure over the Gulf of Mexico continues to feed some moisture into the region and there is the threat for another shower or two as well as some patchy fog later tonight. Temperatures will stay above normal for the remainder of the work week and there might even be a flirtation with the 80 degree mark for highs on Friday afternoon - just ahead of a cold front. This strong cold front will pass through the region on Friday night - potentially with strong thunderstorms - and usher in a much cooler air mass for the weekend.

Very mild air for this time of year will return to the Mid-Atlantic region today following the overnight passage of a warm frontal system. Temperatures could reach the 70 degree mark for highs each of the next three work days and it will stay quite mild right into the weekend. On Saturday, a strong cold front will approach from the northwest and likely generate showers around here and perhaps a thunderstorm or two. It’ll turn quite a bit colder on Sunday following the passage of the cold frontal system and temperatures will struggle to escape the 40’s as we close out the weekend.

In just six months - on Monday, August 21, 2017 - not only will there be a total solar eclipse on US soil for the first time since 1979, but totality will extend from coast-to-coast across a good chunk of the country and it will be the first total eclipse visible only in the US since the country was founded in 1776.
